TITLE: "An Agonizing Absence" TEXT: John 11: 1-7, 20-33 "FIRESIDE CHAT" QUESTIONS

 

1. Can you remember a time when you felt ignored or forgotten by god? What did it feel like? How does the story of Lazarus, Mary and Martha illuminate your own experience?

 

2. Do you agree that “Love complicates the life of God?” How would things be different if God indulge our every request?

 

3. Jesus refers to death as "falling asleep" How is this a fitting metaphor for those who have died in faith?

 

4. Some Christians believe "showing grief" manifests a lack of faith. How does the text this morning challenge this notion?

 

5. Why is it hard to live with the "silence of God" in our lives? What do you do to counter it?

 

6. If God is silent does it also mean he is absent? What proves your answer from your experience?

 

7. In what ways does our story\text of Lazarus a commentary on Jesus' power to give eternal life in pact our journey on this side of glory?

 

8. Given God working in our text today, what does it say about God in our own story of dealing with sickness in our own life or the life of a loved one?

 

9. Have you experienced any "little resurrections" during these seasons of grief and sickness that we are experiencing right now?
