Title : Going Beyond a Mere Conversation with Jesus
Text: John 3:1-16
1.Jesus says one must be born of "water and the Spirit" [3:5] Since water refers not to birth water of a physical birth but baptismal water signifying the new birth. What does the flow of the conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus suggest to you?
2.What does "Going beyond a mere conversation with Jesus " mean to you?
3.What is the difference between being childlike and being childish? If you contrast Jesus' teachings about becoming as a little child and being born again with Paul's comments in 1 Corinthians 13:11 What do you get?
4.Can you remember a time you felt vulnerable and small and God was especially near? How does that experience illuminate Jesus' encounter with Nicodemus?
5. There's a lot of talk these days about :healing the child within." Is such a healing even possible apart from the gospel?
6.Is the talk about "being born again" confusing to you? In what way?
7.Can you think of other images signifying the new life Christ brings?
8.Is the cross of Christ central to your own consciousness of the love of God? Why or why not?
9.Why was Nicodemus unwilling ---or unable ---to meet Jesus on Jesus' terms?
10.Do you know anybody in your life who is in the same place as Nicodemus ?
11. What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? Has your understanding changed because of today's message?
