Obituary
Berlene Hatcher, age 75, died of natural causes on April 30,2022. She is survived by her three children, Eric, Kevin, and Danielle, who made up the entirety of her world. She was supportive and caring in every way imaginable as could often be seen through the distinctive cheering and encouragement that she proudly displayed while attending their many sporting events, recitals, and activities. Blessed by her motherly oversight, her children did not want for much especially as it pertained to being assured that they were loved to the fullest extent.
Berlene was the youngest of 10 children born to Owen D. Hatchel and Tempie S. Hatcher. Berlene was a 1965 graduate of Pamlico County Central High School where she was an excellent student, played basketball, and drove a school bus part time.
She went on to attend North Carolina Central University and later attended Beauty Culture School. She was a self-taught avid pianist who began playing the piano for churches at the early age of 10 and continued playing and leading choirs for the majority of her adulthood.
Berlene was an honest, genuine, quick witted and a competitive speller who loved a good game of Scrabble as well as solving thousands of crossword puzzles. Berlene spent years working in the education field in a multitude of roles before retiring in 2017 from Boston Public Schools.
Besides her children, Berlene is survived by two siblings, Robert Hatchel (Katie) and Barbara Anne Fisher (Roy Lee), grandchildren Leslie McCain, Jayna Hatcher, Givanna Hatcher, Mya Hatcher, Kevin Hatcher Jr., Eija Hatcher , Evan Santos, daughter in-laws Evelyn Hatcher and Amy Hatcher and several nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Preceding her in death are her siblings William Earl Hatcher, James Henry Hatchel, Harold L. Hatchel, Owen D. Hatchel Jr., Annie B. Hatchel, John S. Hatcher, and her twin sister Gerlene Hatcher.
